U.S. President Donald Trump said he was “very disappointed” with NATO’s European allies over their response to the war with Iran, speaking after his arrival in Turkey for the alliance’s summit.

Trump made the comments while meeting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara. He said the United States had not needed assistance, but described the situation as a test of whether allies would support Washington. Trump added that he has long argued that the United States has helped its allies while questioning whether they would reciprocate.

The remarks put Iran at the center of the summit’s opening discussions and publicly raised Trump’s doubts about allied solidarity. The information available did not include a response from NATO or European member states to his comments.

At a summit press conference the following day, Trump also made claims on U.S. investment, manufacturing construction, the 2020 election, migration and oil prices that CNN assessed as false or unsupported. Those claims were separate from his comments about NATO’s response to Iran.
