Jimmy Kimmel, not Jon Stewart, responded to Sen. Mitch McConnell’s hospital update with a satirical Instagram post that replaced McConnell’s head in the released recovery photograph with Kimmel’s own. Kimmel captioned the edited image by saying he was feeling great for those who had been asking, while Elaine Chao, McConnell’s wife, remained visible in the photo.
McConnell released the original image alongside a statement saying he had fallen at home, was briefly unconscious and had been hospitalized. He said doctors found no broken bones, concussion, heart attack, stroke, tumors or hemorrhages, though he developed a mild case of pneumonia during treatment. His attending physician said the pneumonia responded rapidly to antibiotics and that McConnell had moved to a rehabilitation facility for intensive physical therapy.
The senator said he would not yet return to Senate votes on doctors’ advice but intended to complete his term. His disclosure followed weeks of limited public information about his condition, which prompted broader discussion about the balance between health privacy and public scrutiny for elected officials. Kimmel’s post drew supportive responses from, among others, Henry Winkler and Rep. Jasmine Crockett, according to reports.
