The Committee on Temporary Shelter, known as COTS, plans to hold its fifth annual Back to School Bonanza in Burlington, Vermont, on Aug. 1, distributing school supplies and connecting families with services and community resources. The event is scheduled from noon to 3 p.m. in the organization’s parking lot at 95 North Ave. and is set to proceed rain or shine.

According to the community announcement, any student in need from kindergarten through grade 12 may attend. Organizers say students will be able to select their own supplies and clothing, an approach intended to preserve dignity. Backpacks, clothing access and haircuts are among the offerings designed to help families prepare for the start of the school year.

The program will also include lunch prepared by Feeding Champlain Valley’s culinary team, family portraits, entertainment and activities, while community partners are expected to provide additional resources. COTS said it served about 400 family members at last year’s event and expects to reach roughly 500 this year.

COTS is seeking financial sponsors, donations and volunteers for the event. The available announcement does not identify a free school-uniform distribution or a prom-dress stall as part of the planned program.
